Product Description

"The Micrometer" Scale with Brass Pan by the Dodge Mfg Co

Vintage "The Micrometer" Scale circa 1903. Manufactured by the The Dodge Mfg. Co., Yonkers , NY using patents from the Micrometer Balance Scale Co, and inventors Dennis J. Whelan & Gustave Lundberg.

This beautiful scale has the much more rare "fancy" scroll work design base, as opposed to the more commonly found cast metal base with a marble top plate. It has been 100% restored and looks absolutely amazing - the pictures barley do it justice.  It also works and is near accurate as a scale can be - even after almost 110 years. I used it to measure my Google phone, and it came up with a weight of 4.75 ounces - I then took my phone and weighed it on our digital food scale and it came in at 4.76 ounces! I suppose I should not be that surprised, gravity balance scales are as accurate as anything can be and have been around for thousands of years, but this scale, after being is use for decades as well as being fully restored, the balance weight and screw mechanism are in still near perfect working order.

It's painted with a gloss black base, with gold pin striping and red decorative design pin striping. All the brass has been polished to a mirror like finish and just shows extreamly well as a display piece. Plus, since it's still fully functional, it can do double duty as a house hold postal or food scale.

It can measure up to 20 pounds - each rotation of the dial knobs dials the scale up 2 lbs. The patent dates are all clearly stamped on the name plate: Nov. 22, 1892, March 22, 1898 & July 21, 1903. (Patent number 486787 of Nov. 22, 1892 was issued to Gustave Lundberg of Logan, Utah Territory, Patent number 600979 of March 22, 1898 was issued to Charles Mattice of Troy, NY and assigned to the Micrometer Balance Scale Co. and patent number 734383 of July 21, 1903 was issued to Dennis Whelan of Troy, NY.)

Built Like a Tank, and heavy, it measures, (Without Hopper): 21-1/2 inches long, 8 inches wide and 13 inches high with a net weight before shipping of 53 pounds.
A Very Interesting Scale,  this great piece of history would make an excellent addition to any room or display and is deserving of a place in the finest collections.

Included in this sale are printed copies of all three of the applied patents, for historical background (16 pages in all).
